In our previous BLOG we discussed what implants are and their benefits. In the second instalment of our implant series, we would now like to discuss who is suitable for them.
Dental implants have become a popular and reliable solution for our patients who are looking to replace missing teeth or multiple teeth. They provide a permanent, durable alternative to dentures and bridges, but not everyone is an ideal candidate for the procedure. So, what does make someone a suitable candidate? We asked one of our Principal Dentists, Dr Nancy Yousef.
1. Good General Health
A good candidate for dental implants should be in overall good health. Since implant surgery is a minor surgical procedure, candidates should not have medical conditions that could hinder healing, such as uncontrolled diabetes or heart conditions. This does not mean a patient is not a candidate, but we may need to discuss other elements with their care.
2. Healthy Gums
Having healthy gums is crucial for successful implant placement and longevity. Gum disease can affect the bone and surrounding tissues, which are essential for supporting the implant. If you have gum disease, it must be treated before considering implants. If a patient requires some additional support for their gum health, we provide access to Dr Afra Godarzi-Mofrad our in-house periodontal expert.
3. Adequate Bone
Having strong and sufficient bone support is essential for dental implants because they act as the foundation for the implant to adhere to. Patients who have experienced bone loss due to missing teeth or gum disease may still be candidates, but they might require some additional additions to their treatment plan to provide sufficient support.
4. Non-Smokers (or Willing to Quit)
Smoking can negatively impact the success of dental implants by interfering with the healing process. Smokers interested in implants are encouraged to quit before the surgery and during the healing period to reduce risks. By smoking, you increase the risk of the implant success/longevity.
5. Commitment to Oral Hygiene
Dental implants require excellent oral hygiene for long-term success. Candidates must be committed to maintaining good oral care habits, including regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups.
In summary, suitable candidates for dental implants are those who have good general health, healthy gums/bone, are non-smokers, and are committed to excellent oral hygiene.
