NATIONAL NUTRITION MONTH
Welcome to our March Newsletter!
This month, we’re excited to celebrate Nutrition Month with you. In this edition, we’re sharing some of our practice news and informative content to help nourish both your body and mind.
National Nutrition Month, observed every March, is an annual campaign that highlights the importance of making informed food choices and adopting healthy eating habits. Initiated by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, this month serves as a reminder that nutrition plays a crucial role in overall well-being, including oral health.
A well-balanced diet supports strong teeth and gums by providing essential nutrients such as calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D, which are vital for maintaining healthy bones and teeth. Dairy products, leafy greens, nuts, and fish are excellent sources of these nutrients. Additionally, vitamin C, found in citrus fruits, strawberries, and bell peppers, strengthens gums and prevents conditions like gingivitis.
However, poor nutrition can lead to oral health issues such as cavities, gum disease, and enamel erosion. Excessive sugar and acidic foods contribute to tooth decay by feeding harmful bacteria in the mouth, leading to plaque buildup and weakened enamel. Sugary beverages, such as soda and sports drinks, are particularly damaging when consumed frequently.
Good nutrition should be paired with proper oral hygiene, including regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups. Dentists and nutritionists often work together to educate patients on the connection between diet and oral health.
By making mindful dietary choices, individuals can protect their teeth and gums while also improving overall health. National Nutrition Month serves as a perfect opportunity to reinforce the message that what we eat directly impacts not only our bodies but also our smiles.

Our senior dental nurse Regina visited the Fulham School to teach children the importance of good oral hygiene and importance of a healthy diet.
Antibiotics play an essential role in dental care, particularly in preventing and treating infections. However, at NHS Dentist, we take a holistic approach, ensuring that antibiotic use is both necessary and balanced to support overall well-being.
One of the biggest concerns with antibiotics use is that while they eliminate harmful bacteria, they also disrupt the beneficial bacteria in the gut and mouth. This imbalance can lead to digestive discomfort, reduced immunity, and oral health issues such as thrush or increased susceptibility to infections.
Neglecting your oral health can lead to serious and costly dental issues that require expensive treatments. Here’s why it’s cheaper to maintain good oral hygiene than to ignore it:
Regular dental checkups, cleanings, and basic care (brushing, flossing) are relatively inexpensive.
Ignoring cavities can lead to root canal treatment or tooth extractions. Gum disease, if untreated, may require lifelong specialist dental care. Ultimately, tooth loss from neglect may require implants which are far more expensive than preventive care.
Poor oral health is linked to serious conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and infections.
Dental pain can lead to missed workdays and reduced productivity, which can indirectly affect earnings.
Finally, poor oral health can impact confidence and social interactions, affecting mental well-being and even career opportunities.
Spending a little on preventive care (brushing, flossing, regular checkups) saves thousands of pounds in potential future treatments. Investing in oral health now prevents expensive and painful problems later.
