The Three Stages of Periodontal Care: What to Expect
As we wrap up our periodontal series, we want to give you a simple and clear understanding of the three main stages of periodontal care: stabilisation, correction, and maintenance. These stages are designed to improve your gum health and keep your smile strong for years to come.
1. Stabilisation
The first stage focuses on stopping the progression of gum disease. If you have been diagnosed with periodontal disease, stabilising it is the top priority. This is done through deep cleaning procedures, such as scaling and root planning. This is to remove bacteria and plaque from beneath the gums. During this stage, Dr. Afra Godarzi-Mofrad will also guide you on the optimal oral hygiene routines at home. The goal here is to reduce inflammation and prevent further damage to your gums and bone.
2. Correction
Once your gum disease is stabilised, the next step for some patients is to address any effects because of the disease. This could involve additional treatments to restore the health of your gums and teeth. In some cases, minor surgical procedures may be needed to repair the gum tissue or bone. Don’t worry—these procedures are designed to help your gums heal properly and improve the overall stability of your teeth. Please note, this stage is not necessarily needed for all patients.
3. Maintenance
After stabilisation and potentially correction, the most important stage is maintenance. This is all about keeping your gums healthy for the long term. Regular dental visits and hygienist sessions will be necessary. We also recommend periodic reviews to monitor your gum health and ensure that the disease does not return. With a consistent at-home care routine and check-ups, you can enjoy a healthy, happy smile.
